A coil spring spacer is a ring that sits at the top or bottom of a coil spring and raises the vehicle by the spacer's thickness. On a 4WD, spacers are most often used to level a vehicle that sits low at one end, to take up the height a bull bar or rear load has taken away, or to fine-tune ride height alongside new springs. They are simple parts, but they do not change what the spring can carry, and that is the point most buyers need to understand first. Insulators and spring seats sit in the same place and do a related job, isolating the spring from the body and locating it on its mount. Use the vehicle search to find coil spring spacers to suit your VG, VP MALOO.

What Do VG, VP MALOO Coil Spring Spacers Do?

A spacer adds height between the spring and its mount. The spring compresses to the same length under the same load, but it starts from a higher point, so the body sits higher by roughly the thickness of the spacer.

Placement changes the effect on some suspension designs. On a solid axle rear, a spacer under or over the coil raises that corner by about its thickness. On an independent front end with a strut, a spacer fitted at the top of the strut works through the lower arm's leverage, so the lift at the wheel can differ from the spacer's thickness.

What a spacer does not do is change the spring rate. A spring that was sagging under the load still compresses the same amount when the load goes on. The vehicle simply starts that compression from a higher point.

When Is a Spacer the Right Choice for Your VG, VP MALOO?

Levelling Your VG, VP MALOO

The most common use on a 4WD is levelling. A bull bar and winch can pull the front down, or a heavy rear setup can make the vehicle sit nose high. If the springs are still in good condition and rated close to the load, a small spacer can bring the stance back to level.

Fine-Tuning Your VG, VP MALOO After New Springs

Even springs rated for the load can sit slightly lower than expected once everything settles. A thin spacer can make up a small difference without changing springs again.

Correcting VG, VP MALOO Side-to-Side Lean

Some vehicles sit lower on one side, often because of a fuel tank, battery or driver weight. A spacer on the low side can square the vehicle up.

When It Is Not the Right Choice

If the vehicle sags because the springs are worn out or under-rated for the load, a spacer hides the problem rather than fixing it. The suspension still bottoms out over corrugations, still pitches under braking and still loses height when the gear goes in. In that case, springs rated for the real load are the fix, and spacers only belong alongside them for fine-tuning.

Are VG, VP MALOO Coil Spring Spacers Safe and Legal?

These are the first questions most buyers ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on how they are used and where the vehicle is registered.

Suspension modifications must meet the requirements that apply where the vehicle is registered. Those requirements differ and they change. Some jurisdictions treat spacers differently from springs, and some limit how much of a lift can come from spacers or packers. There is no single answer.

What is consistent is that the rules generally look at total lift, and tyres count toward it. A spacer plus a larger tyre plus any other suspension change all add up. Check the current requirements where your vehicle is registered before fitting spacers, and work out the combined figure rather than looking at the spacer in isolation.

On safety, a properly made spacer of the right size, fitted correctly, is generally not a problem in itself. The risks come from how it is used. A thick spacer on a strut can preload the spring and reduce droop travel, which can firm the ride and lift a wheel more readily off road. A spacer that lifts the vehicle beyond what the shocks were designed for can let the shock top out. A spacer used to mask a worn spring leaves the vehicle overloaded at a higher ride height.

What Types of VG, VP MALOO Spacers, Insulators and Seats Are There?

VG, VP MALOO Coil Spring Spacers

Spacers come in a range of thicknesses, typically from a few millimetres to a few centimetres. Thinner spacers suit levelling and fine-tuning. Thicker spacers raise the vehicle further but bring the trade-offs above into play. Most are made from polyurethane, rubber, aluminium or steel, with polyurethane common on 4WDs because it resists oil and holds its shape under load.

VG, VP MALOO Strut Top Spacers

Strut top spacers fit between the top of a strut assembly and the body on independent front ends. They raise the front without changing the spring, and the lift at the wheel depends on the strut's mounting geometry.

VG, VP MALOO Spring Insulators

Insulators sit between the spring and its seat. They stop metal-to-metal contact, reduce noise and help prevent the spring end from wearing into the mount. A cracked or missing insulator can cause creaking, clunking and corrosion at the seat. Insulators are often replaced when springs are changed, and some are made in different thicknesses to add a small amount of height.

VG, VP MALOO Spring Seats

Spring seats locate the spring on the chassis or axle and hold it square. Worn or corroded seats can let a spring shift or sit unevenly, which affects height and can cause noise.

VG, VP MALOO Lifted, Loaded and Towing Considerations

VG, VP MALOO Shock Travel

Every millimetre of lift from a spacer is a millimetre less shock extension at full droop. On a vehicle that is already lifted, a spacer can push the shock to the end of its travel. If the spacer is part of a lift rather than a levelling job, check that the shocks suit the new height.

VG, VP MALOO Geometry

Raising an independent front end changes the control arm angles, and raising a coil sprung solid axle changes the radius arm and trailing arm angles. A small spacer usually has a small effect. A larger one can change camber, caster and the angle of the CV joints enough to need correction.

Loaded VG, VP MALOO

Spacers do not add load capacity. A loaded 4WD needs springs that can carry the weight. Weighing the vehicle fitted out is the most reliable way to know whether the springs are up to the job or whether a spacer is being asked to cover for them.

Towing With Your VG, VP MALOO

Towbar download compresses the rear and lifts the front. A spacer can help level the vehicle at rest, but it does not change how far the rear drops when a trailer goes on. Springs rated for the download are generally the better answer for regular towing.

What Comes With a VG, VP MALOO Spacer Kit?

Kits vary. Some include a pair of spacers for one axle, while others add insulators or hardware. Thickness and position, front or rear, top or bottom, differ between kits. Check the product details for the spacer thickness, position and what is supplied.

Should You Use Spacers or Replace the VG, VP MALOO Springs?

Spacers make sense when the springs are healthy and rated close to the load, and the change needed is small. They are cheaper and quicker than new springs.

Replacing the springs makes more sense when the vehicle sags because the springs are worn, when the load has increased beyond what the springs were rated for, or when the lift needed is more than a small spacer should provide. Spacers and springs are not either-or, though. A thin spacer on a new, correctly rated spring is a common way to get the stance exactly right.

Fitting VG, VP MALOO Coil Spring Spacers

Fitting spacers means removing the spring, which on many vehicles involves compressing it, so it is a job for a qualified technician. The vehicle is supported on rated stands, the axle or strut is supported as the spring comes out, and the spacer is fitted in the correct position with any insulator.

Bushes that were disturbed are tightened at ride height and all fasteners are torqued to specification. A wheel alignment is required after any change to front ride height, and a road test confirms the result. Measure the ride height before and after, so you know exactly what the spacer has added.

Find the Right VG, VP MALOO Coil Spring Spacers with Formula 4x4

Use the vehicle search, then measure how far the vehicle sits from where you want it at each corner. Check whether the springs are healthy and rated for the load before deciding a spacer is the answer. Confirm the thickness and position, check the requirements where your vehicle is registered for total lift, and book a wheel alignment for after fitting.

Spacers and seats sit within the Formula 4x4 suspension bushes range, and universal coil spring spacers cover vehicles without a direct-fit kit.
