A pre-assembled strut for the NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON arrives with the damper, spring and top mount already built into one unit, ready to bolt straight on.

The appeal of that arrangement is straightforward. Nobody has to compress a spring, and every component in the assembly is new at the same time.

What Your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON Pre-Assembled Strut Is

A conventional strut replacement means removing the old unit, compressing the spring with spring compressors, dismantling the assembly, transferring the spring and mount to the new damper, and reassembling it under compression.

A pre-assembled strut, sometimes listed as a complete or ready strut, skips all of that. The damper, coil spring, top mount, bearing, bump stop and dust boot come assembled as one part.

Fitting it means unbolting the old assembly and bolting the new one in, which turns a workshop job with specialist tooling into a straightforward replacement.

Why Spring Compressors Are the Real Issue

This is the practical argument and it is worth taking seriously.

A coil spring under compression holds a large amount of stored energy. Released unexpectedly, it causes severe injury, and that is not a theoretical risk.

Spring compressors have to be fitted squarely, tightened evenly and released in a controlled sequence. Hire units are frequently worn, and the common failure is a compressor slipping off a coil while loaded.

Pre-assembled struts remove that step entirely, which is why they have become the default on many applications.

What Else Gets Replaced in the Deal on Your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON

The components people reuse on a conventional strut rebuild are usually the ones that have worn out.

The top mount carries the load of the corner into the body and contains a bearing on steering applications. A perished mount knocks over bumps, and the bearing can make the steering notchy or cause it to not return to centre.

The bump stop controls what happens at full compression, and an old one crumbles.

The dust boot protects the shaft from grit, which is what destroys the seal and starts the leak.

On a conventional rebuild those three are often carried over to save money, and they then fail shortly after the new damper goes in, with the noise blamed on the new part.

What Is Not Included With Your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON Pre-Assembled Strut

Worth checking before ordering, because assumptions cost time on the hoist.

Fasteners are usually not supplied, and the top mount nuts on many applications are single use.

The lower mounting bolts, including any camber or eccentric bolts, generally stay with the vehicle.

Anything below the strut, including the ball joint, control arm bushes and the sway bar link, is a separate purchase.

Check the listing for what is actually included rather than assuming the assembly covers everything the corner needs.

NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON Spring Rate and Ride Height

A pre-assembled strut comes with a spring already fitted, so the spring choice is made for you.

That matters on a vehicle carrying permanent accessory weight. A unit supplied with a standard rate spring will sit lower on a vehicle with a bull bar and winch than on a bare one, because the spring was specified around the standard vehicle.

It also means a pre-assembled unit is not the route to a ride height change unless the assembly is specified at a raised height.

Where a vehicle needs a specific rate for its load, check what rate the assembly carries rather than assuming it matches your current spring.

When a Pre-Assembled Strut Is the Wrong Choice for Your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON

They are not automatically the right answer, and a few situations suit a conventional damper better.

A vehicle needing a specific spring rate for permanent accessory load is the clearest. A pre-assembled unit comes with the spring already chosen, and if that rate does not suit what the vehicle carries, the assembly will sit at the wrong height.

A vehicle where the springs were recently replaced is the second. Buying new springs again inside an assembly is money spent twice.

A build that is changing ride height is the third, unless the assembly is specified at the raised height required.

And where only the top mount has failed with a sound damper and spring, replacing the mount alone costs far less, even allowing for the spring compression work.

Check the spring rate the assembly carries before ordering rather than assuming it matches what is on your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON.

Fitting Pre-Assembled Struts to Your NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON

Replace them in pairs across the axle every time. A new assembly against an old one leaves the vehicle with different spring rate and different damping at each side.

Support the hub when the strut comes out, since the knuckle will drop and hang on the brake hose and the ABS cable if it is not held.

Mark the position of any camber bolts before loosening them so the alignment can be returned close to where it was, though an alignment is still required afterwards.

Use new top mount nuts where they are single use, and torque everything with the vehicle at ride height rather than hanging.

Have a wheel alignment done, since the strut forms part of the steering geometry and the alignment will have moved.

Quick Struts, Complete Struts and Loaded Struts

The same product goes by several names, which makes searching harder than it should be.

Quick strut, complete strut, loaded strut, ready strut and pre-assembled strut all describe an assembly supplied with the damper, spring, top mount, bearing, bump stop and boot already built up.

The differences between brands are in what is included and in the quality of the components rather than in the concept.

What matters when comparing them is whether the spring is a matched rate for the application, whether the top mount and bearing are new rather than refurbished, and whether the damper specification suits how the vehicle is used.

A cheap complete strut with an unspecified spring rate can leave a vehicle sitting at the wrong height, which is harder to diagnose than a worn damper.

Why the Top Mount Matters in the NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON Assembly

The component most often reused on a conventional rebuild is the one most likely to be worn out.

A top mount carries the load of that corner into the body and, at the front, contains the bearing the strut rotates on as the wheel steers.

A perished mount knocks over bumps and lets the top of the strut move, which means the camber and caster at that wheel shift under load. The alignment reads correctly on the hoist and does not hold on the road.

A failing bearing makes the steering notchy, noisy at full lock, or reluctant to return to centre, and those symptoms get misdiagnosed as steering faults regularly.

Getting a new one as part of the assembly removes both problems, which is a large part of what the extra parts cost is actually buying.

NPW 4WD UTE, CANNON Pre-Assembled Against a Conventional Rebuild

Both end with a working strut, and the comparison is about what you are paying for.

A conventional rebuild is cheaper in parts, since you are buying only the damper. It costs more in labour, needs spring compressors, and carries the risk of reusing worn mounts and bump stops.

A pre-assembled unit costs more in parts and less in labour, and every wear item in the assembly is new.

For a vehicle with high kilometres where the mounts and bump stops are as old as the dampers, pre-assembled usually works out better value once the labour is counted.

For a vehicle where the spring and mount were recently replaced and only the damper has failed, the conventional route makes more sense.
