Camber bolts give a 4WD's suspension extra camber adjustment beyond the factory range. On a lifted independent front suspension 4WD, the control arms sit at a different angle, which can push camber, and often caster, outside the range the factory adjustment can reach. Camber bolts and correction kits extend that range, so a wheel alignment can bring the angles back within specification. Use the vehicle search to find camber bolts to suit your RG SPORTSCAT.

What Is Camber on Your RG SPORTSCAT?

Camber is the inward or outward tilt of a wheel when viewed from the front of the vehicle. If the top of the wheel tilts inward toward the engine, that is negative camber. If it tilts outward, that is positive camber. Vehicle manufacturers specify a camber range for each vehicle, usually close to vertical with a small amount of tilt.

Correct camber keeps the tyre's tread sitting flat on the road, so the load is spread evenly across it. When camber is outside its range, the tyre rides more on one edge, which can wear that edge faster and affect how the vehicle steers and handles.

What Do RG SPORTSCAT Camber Bolts Do?

A camber bolt replaces a standard bolt at a suspension mounting point and adds adjustment. Some camber bolts have an offset, or eccentric, cam that sits against the mounting bracket. Turning the bolt rotates the cam, which pushes the suspension arm or strut in or out, tilting the top of the wheel. Other designs use a bolt with a smaller shank than the original, giving the strut or arm room to move within its mounting hole before the bolt is tightened.

Either way, the bolt lets a technician set camber to the required angle during a wheel alignment. Once it is set and tightened to the specified torque, the bolt holds that position. Camber bolts do not change camber by themselves. They provide the adjustment range, and the alignment sets the angle.

Do You Need Camber Bolts After a RG SPORTSCAT Lift?

Often, on independent front suspension 4WDs. Lifting the vehicle extends the suspension, so the control arms sit at a steeper angle than standard. That changes the position of the top and bottom of the steering knuckle, which moves camber, and often caster, away from where the manufacturer set them.

On some vehicles, the factory adjustment can still bring camber back within specification after a mild lift. On others, the adjustment runs out before the angle is correct, leaving camber at or beyond the edge of the acceptable range. Camber bolts and correction kits extend the adjustment so the alignment can reach the correct setting. A wheel alignment check after the lift shows whether your vehicle needs them.

RG SPORTSCAT Camber and Caster: Why Many Kits Adjust Both

On many independent front suspension 4WDs, the lower control arm is mounted to the chassis at two points, front and rear, each with an adjustment cam. Turning both cams by the same amount moves the arm in or out, changing camber. Turning them by different amounts moves one end of the arm further than the other, changing caster.

That is why many lower control arm camber bolt kits adjust both angles. Caster affects straight-line stability and how the steering returns to centre, and it often reduces when an independent front suspension 4WD is lifted. A kit that extends the range of both cams lets the technician restore camber and caster together during the alignment. Check the product details to see which angles a kit is designed to adjust.

Universal or Vehicle-Specific RG SPORTSCAT Camber Bolt Kits?

Camber bolt kits come in two broad types. Universal kits are made in a range of diameters, commonly from around 10mm to 17mm, to replace a standard bolt of the same size at a strut or suspension mount. They suit many vehicles, but you need to match the kit to the diameter of the bolt hole and confirm that the mounting point can accept an adjusting bolt.

Vehicle-specific kits are designed for the suspension mounts of particular vehicles, often replacing the factory lower control arm adjusting cams with ones that provide more range. They are designed to fit the vehicle's mounting brackets directly. For lifted independent front suspension 4WDs, vehicle-specific lower control arm kits are often the more direct solution, while universal kits suit vehicles with strut-mounted adjustment points. Check which type suits your vehicle's suspension design.

Choosing the Right Camber Bolt Size for Your RG SPORTSCAT

For universal camber bolts, the size refers to the diameter of the bolt being replaced. Measure the existing bolt, or check the vehicle's specifications, before ordering. A bolt that is too small for the hole will not clamp securely, and one that is too large will not fit.

Check the bolt length and thread as well, so the replacement passes fully through the mount and engages the nut correctly. Where a vehicle has adjustment points in more than one position, the front and rear or left and right mounts may need different kits.

RG SPORTSCAT Camber Bolts or Adjustable Control Arms?

Camber bolts suit small to moderate corrections. They are a cost-effective way to extend adjustment range when a vehicle is just outside specification, which is common after a mild lift.

Larger lifts can move camber and caster further than a camber bolt can correct. In those cases, replacement upper control arms, with an offset or adjustable ball joint position, can provide more correction and often more ball joint angle as well. Some vehicles use a combination of both. A wheel alignment check after the lift shows how far the angles are from specification, which helps decide whether bolts are enough.

Can Camber Bolts Help With RG SPORTSCAT Tyre Wear?

They can help when uneven tyre wear comes from camber that cannot be adjusted back within its range. Restoring the adjustment lets the alignment set camber correctly, which can reduce wear on the inner or outer edge of the tyre.

Camber is not the only cause of uneven tyre wear, though. Worn ball joints, control arm bushes, tie rod ends and wheel bearings let the alignment change as the vehicle moves. Incorrect toe, tyre pressures, overloading and driving style also affect wear. Have the suspension, steering and alignment checked together to find the cause.

Do RG SPORTSCAT Camber Bolts Go in the Top or Bottom Hole?

It depends on the kit and the vehicle. On strut-type suspension, where the strut bolts to the steering knuckle with two bolts, kits may replace the upper bolt, the lower bolt or both, depending on the design and how much adjustment is needed. On vehicles with lower control arm cams, the kit replaces the cams at the arm's mounting points. Follow the fitting instructions supplied with the kit, since the correct position varies.

Does Your RG SPORTSCAT Need an Alignment After Fitting?

Yes. Camber bolts only provide the adjustment. A wheel alignment is what sets camber, caster and toe to the correct angles. Fitting camber bolts without an alignment can leave the angles further out than before.

Are Camber Bolts Safe on Your RG SPORTSCAT?

Yes, when the correct kit is used for the vehicle, it is fitted as instructed, and it is tightened to the specified torque. Because the bolt holds the suspension in its adjusted position, it should be checked after fitting and rechecked after the first few hundred kilometres. Some technicians mark the bolt and bracket after tightening, making any movement easy to see at the next inspection. Camber bolt installation should be carried out by a qualified technician with alignment equipment.

Find the Right Camber Bolts for Your RG SPORTSCAT with Formula 4x4

Strut camber bolts come in vehicle-specific kits from the Formula 4x4 alignment parts range, and workshops can save with bulk camber bolt packs.

Start with a wheel alignment check to see how far camber and caster sit from specification. Identify whether your vehicle uses strut bolts or lower control arm cams, and note your lift height.
