A 4WD steering damper is a hydraulic damper mounted across the steering linkage that slows sudden steering movements. When a front tyre hits a rock, rut or pothole, the impact tries to snap the wheels to one side and kick the steering wheel in your hands. The damper resists that rapid movement, reducing kickback and helping keep the steering steady on rough tracks and corrugated roads. Steering dampers are most common on solid front axle 4WDs, and fitment is specific to each vehicle, so use the vehicle search to find steering dampers to suit your 75 Series BUNDERA.

What Does a 75 Series BUNDERA Steering Damper Do?

A steering damper works on the same principle as a shock absorber. Inside its body, a piston moves through oil, and the oil has to pass through small valves as the piston travels. That restriction resists fast movement while allowing slow movement through with little effort.

On the steering, that means the damper barely affects normal steering inputs, because turning the wheel is a relatively slow movement. A sudden impact at the tyre is fast, so the damper resists it, absorbing much of the shock before it reaches the steering wheel. One end of the damper mounts to the axle or chassis and the other to the steering linkage, usually the tie rod, so it acts across the full steering range.

A steering damper does not change the steering geometry. It cannot correct bump steer, alignment problems or worn components. Its job is to control the speed of steering movement, not where the steering points.

75 Series BUNDERA Steering Damper vs Steering Stabiliser

Steering damper and steering stabiliser are two names for the same part. Some manufacturers and owners use one term, some the other, but both describe a hydraulic damper fitted to the steering linkage to control sudden movement. In the US, the part is often spelt stabilizer.

Does Your 75 Series BUNDERA Need a Steering Damper After a Lift or Bigger Tyres?

Larger, heavier tyres are one of the most common reasons owners upgrade a steering damper. A taller tyre increases the leverage acting on the steering when it strikes an obstacle, and a heavier tyre and wheel carry more inertia, so impacts produce stronger and sharper kickback through the steering wheel. A standard damper designed for factory tyres may not control that extra force as well.

A lift can add to this. On a solid front axle 4WD, lifting the vehicle changes the angles of the steering linkage, which can make the steering more sensitive to bumps. Many owners fitting a lift and larger tyres choose an upgraded steering damper at the same time. It is not a substitute for correct steering geometry and sound steering components, but it can make the steering more settled and less tiring on rough roads.

Can a Steering Damper Fix 75 Series BUNDERA Death Wobble?

Death wobble is a violent oscillation of the front wheels and steering, most common on solid front axle 4WDs. It is usually triggered by hitting a bump at speed, and once it starts, the front end shakes hard until the vehicle slows down significantly. It can be alarming and makes the vehicle difficult to control.

A steering damper can help control steering shake, and a worn damper can make death wobble more likely to develop. A damper does not fix the cause of death wobble, though. Fitting a stronger damper to a front end with worn or loose components can suppress the symptoms for a while, but the underlying problem remains, and it usually continues to get worse. Have a technician find and correct the cause first, then fit a damper in good condition as part of a sound steering system.

Common Causes of 75 Series BUNDERA Steering Shake

Death wobble and steering shake usually come from a combination of factors. Worn or loose tie rod ends and drag link ends are common culprits, as are worn panhard rod or track bar bushes, which let the axle move sideways. Worn ball joints, loose or worn wheel bearings, and a loose steering box mount can also contribute. Incorrect caster, unbalanced or out-of-round tyres and bent wheels can make the vehicle more prone to shake. Often several of these combine, so the whole front end needs checking.

What Makes a 75 Series BUNDERA Big Bore Steering Damper Different?

A big bore steering damper uses a larger internal bore than a standard damper. A larger bore allows a larger piston, which works against a greater area of oil, and the larger body holds more oil overall. This is generally intended to give the damper more control over sudden steering movements and more capacity to absorb heat.

Heat matters for a steering damper just as it does for a shock absorber. On long stretches of corrugations, the damper works constantly, and the oil inside heats up. As oil heats, it thins and the damper's resistance can fade. More oil volume helps the damper take longer to heat up and stay consistent over long, rough drives. Check the product details for the specifications of a particular damper.

Signs Your 75 Series BUNDERA Steering Damper May Be Worn

Common signs include oil leaking from the damper body or around the shaft seal, which shows as a wet or oily film on the damper. A damper that moves freely by hand with little or no resistance once disconnected, or that has a flat spot in its travel, has lost its damping. You may also notice more kickback through the steering wheel on rough roads than you used to.

Physical damage is another indicator. Check the damper body and shaft for dents, bends or deep scratches, and the bushes at each end for cracking or wear. A bent shaft or damaged body affects how the damper works. Worn steering components elsewhere can also increase kickback, so a technician should check the linkage at the same time.

75 Series BUNDERA Steering Damper Mounting Styles

Steering dampers attach at each end using different mounting styles, depending on the vehicle. Some use an eye mount, where a bush in a ring at the end of the damper bolts through a bracket. Others use a pin mount, where a threaded stud passes through a bush and is secured with a nut. Some dampers have a pin at one end and an eye at the other, while pin-to-pin dampers use a pin at both ends.

The mounting style must match the brackets on your vehicle. Check the mounts on your existing damper, or the product details for your vehicle, before ordering, so the replacement bolts in without modification.

Fitting a 75 Series BUNDERA Steering Damper: An Overview

Fitting a steering damper is usually a bolt-on job using the existing mounting points. The vehicle is supported securely, the old damper is unbolted from its mounts at each end, and the new damper is fitted in its place, with mounting bolts or nuts tightened to the specified torque.

Before driving, turn the steering from full lock to full lock and check that the damper does not reach the end of its travel before the steering stops, and that it does not contact any other component. A damper that bottoms out or binds can limit steering lock or be damaged. Check that the steering returns to centre normally, and recheck the mounting fasteners after the first drive.

Shop 75 Series BUNDERA Steering Dampers with Formula 4x4

Big tyres and rough tracks push a steering damper hard. Spares for the rest of the front end are in our steering parts range.

Start by confirming your steering linkage is in good condition, and consider whether larger tyres or a lift have increased steering kickback. Search by your 75 Series BUNDERA to find steering dampers to suit your 75 Series BUNDERA, and check the mounting style matches your existing brackets. If you are unsure which damper your vehicle needs, contact the Formula 4x4 team.
