Formula 4x4's ReadyStrut Spanner Kit contains two spanners made specifically for Formula 4x4 adjustable ReadyStruts. Before using them, check the relevant strut instructions to confirm their intended application, as different adjustable strut designs use different mechanisms.
What Strut Tools Does Formula 4x4 Offer?
Strut tools are used for specific tasks involved in suspension installation, adjustment and servicing. The type of tool required depends on the strut's construction and how its components are assembled.
The Formula ReadyStrut Spanner Kit is a pair of specialised spanners designed to suit Formula 4x4 adjustable ReadyStruts. Unlike general-purpose suspension tools, the kit is intended for a particular strut system rather than multiple unrelated suspension components.
This distinction matters because strut tools are not interchangeable. A strut spanner, coil spring compressor and strut mounting socket perform different functions, even though they may all be used during suspension work.
The ReadyStrut spanner kit should therefore be selected according to the strut assembly being serviced, rather than assuming that any adjustable strut or coilover spanner will fit.
What Is the ReadyStrut Spanner Kit Used For?
The Formula ReadyStrut Spanner Kit is designed for compatibility with Formula 4x4 adjustable ReadyStruts. It contains two spanners, providing dedicated tooling for the compatible strut assembly.
Specialised spanners are commonly used where suspension components have notched, slotted or shaped surfaces that ordinary open-ended spanners cannot engage correctly.
However, not all adjustable struts operate in the same way. Some use threaded spring seats or locking collars, while others use retaining clips or alternative height-setting mechanisms. A conventional coilover spanner designed for threaded collars may not suit a different adjustment system.
Formula 4x4's height-adjustable ReadyStruts use a circlip-mounted spring seat, but the spanner kit's published specifications do not identify which components the spanners operate.
Check the relevant fitting documentation before using the kit. The correct tool application is important for avoiding damage to the strut hardware.
Do You Need Special Tools to Fit Pre-Assembled Struts?
Pre-assembled struts simplify suspension installation because the spring, shock absorber and associated mounting components are already assembled into a complete unit.
For a straightforward replacement, installation generally requires standard workshop equipment, including suitable sockets, spanners, lifting equipment and a torque wrench. A spring compressor is not normally needed when fitting an intact pre-assembled strut without dismantling its spring assembly.
The ReadyStrut spanner kit should not be confused with the tools required for routine vehicle installation. Its availability does not mean every ReadyStrut installation requires these dedicated spanners.
The vehicle's suspension layout also determines the work involved. Removing the original strut may require disconnecting suspension or steering components to create clearance, and the replacement assembly must be installed using the specified fasteners and tightening procedures.
Formula 4x4 recommends installation by a qualified mechanic or suspension technician. This is particularly important when replacing struts as part of a suspension lift or when other components require adjustment.
How Do You Adjust Ride Height on Height-Adjustable Struts?
Ride height adjustment depends on the strut's design. Threaded coilover assemblies commonly use adjustable spring seats, while Formula 4x4 height-adjustable ReadyStruts use a three-position circlip system.
On the applicable Formula 4x4 design, the spring seat is supported by a retaining circlip positioned in one of three grooves on the strut body. Changing the selected position alters the spring seat height and can influence the vehicle's front ride height.
The final height also depends on the spring specification, vehicle weight and accessories fitted. An adjustment does not necessarily produce the same measured height change across different vehicle configurations.
Changing the circlip position is not equivalent to turning a threaded adjustment collar. Depending on the assembly, access to the spring seat may require strut removal and controlled spring disassembly.
Because coil springs store substantial energy, spring seat adjustments should be performed by a suitably equipped suspension technician following the relevant Formula 4x4 procedure.
Do You Need a Coil Spring Compressor?
A coil spring compressor is used to compress and restrain a coil spring during certain suspension assembly and disassembly procedures.
If you're installing a complete pre-assembled ReadyStrut without taking it apart, a spring compressor is generally unnecessary. The spring is already installed and retained within the assembly.
The situation changes when a strut needs to be dismantled, a spring replaced or a spring seat repositioned. These procedures may require suitable spring-compression equipment, depending on the strut design and manufacturer's instructions.
A strut spanner is not a replacement for a spring compressor. The tools perform different functions, and attempting to release a loaded spring without proper restraint can cause serious injury.
For this reason, work involving spring disassembly should be left to technicians with appropriate equipment and training.
What Should You Check After Fitting or Adjusting Struts?
Replacing or adjusting front struts can affect suspension geometry, particularly when the vehicle's ride height changes.
Before returning the vehicle to regular use, several checks help confirm that the suspension has been assembled correctly:
- Fastener torque: Tighten mounting bolts and related suspension fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications, following any required tightening sequence or ride-height procedure.
- Strut positioning: Confirm the assemblies, springs and mounting components are correctly seated and secured.
- Suspension clearance: Check that brake hoses, wiring and surrounding components have adequate clearance throughout the required suspension movement.
- Wheel alignment: Have the alignment checked and adjusted as necessary to address geometry changes that could affect steering behaviour and tyre wear.
- Post-installation inspection: Recheck accessible fasteners and inspect for unusual noises, movement or clearance issues after the initial drive, following the manufacturer's specified inspection requirements.
A properly completed installation is about more than achieving the intended ride height. The suspension must also move freely and operate within its designed limits.
