The N90 Hilux carries its load on rear leaf springs, and that is where a loaded bakkie sags first. Add a canopy, drawers, water and a trip's worth of gear, or hitch a trailer, and the rear drops, the headlights point skywards and the steering goes light. Getting the rear right is what keeps a loaded N90 level, safe and comfortable on a long gravel run.
Factory leaf springs are rated for a standard load on tar. Pile on a permanent load like a canopy and drawers, or tow, and the springs compress past their comfortable range. The rear sits low, which lifts the nose, reduces steering weight and points the headlights up at oncoming traffic. It also means the springs and bushes work harder and wear faster.
